Amy Winehouse Film Based on Her Life in the Works

An Amy Winehouse film, Back to Black, which is going to be inspired by her life story, is set to be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Amy Winehouse was one of the most influential musical artists of her generation and a new film will be telling her life story to the world. This upcoming picture will be helmed by filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson who, in 2015, had directed the big box-office hit, Fifty Shades of Grey.

In 2015, the award-winning A24 documentary, Amy, showcased the real-life struggles and triumphs of the acclaimed music sensation, Winehouse. That film made a smooth $8.4 million domestically and another $15.2 million overseas which suggests there will be a lot of interest in a feature film based on Winehouse’s life. That aforementioned documentary, Amy, carries a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It showed Amy’s love for her father and her husband and the themes of the real-life footage had a lot of tragedy immersed in it.

Winehouse died in London in 2011 from alcohol poisoning. Her story is so heart-wrenching that it made the 2015 film a true triumph in terms of its emotional impact and it went on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary.

The casting of the new biopic to be directed by Winehouse’s friend, Taylor-Johnson, is open-ended and many predict that a newcomer could nail the role though it is not certain as of yet who will play the doomed artist in the new picture. Back to Black also has the support of Winehouse’s dad, Mitch, who was shown to be a difficult person to care about in the documentary.

Matt Greenhalgh will be writing the biopic. He also penned the amazing 2007 film, Control, which was about Joy Division artist, Ian Curtis. Back to Black is also the title of the album that won Winehouse much acclaim as it earned an astonishing half a dozen Grammys for the acclaimed artist.

Winehouse died at the age of 27 and lived a short life but she remains one of the most influential musical artists of all-time. It is going to be great to see Taylor-Johnson direct a story which has so much personal attachment to it for those involved, particularly from the director and Winehouse’s dad.

Fifty Shades of Grey earned an amazing $166 million domestically and another $403 million overseas. That proves that the director, Taylor-Johnson, knows what it takes to create a box-office hit. Although it had a low Rotten Tomatoes score, people were comparing it to the book which caused a bit of controversy.

With Back to Black, people will most likely enjoy learning about the life of the multi-talented Winehouse. It’s the type of lead role that could earn performers Oscar nominations but no matter how good the chosen performer plays Winehouse, the artist, herself, was a one-of-a-kind original that can never be perfectly duplicated.
