Ridley Scott To Executive Produce Series Set in the World of Blade Runner

Legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott is slated to executive produce a limited Amazon series set in the Blade Runner universe titled Blade Runner 2099.

A follow-up to the two popular Blade Runner films will soon be a live-action Amazon series to be made for Prime Video. The original 1982 Blade Runner, which starred Harrison Ford, was one of the most ambitious science fiction movies ever made while the terrifically made 2017 picture, Blade Runner 2049 received quite a few technical Oscar nods and even won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for the year in which it was released. Roger Deakins’s flair for visuals earned him the Oscar, without a doubt, for that precise and powerful picture.

Harrison Ford starred in a prominent role in both the Blade Runner pictures and many consider that it was one of the acclaimed actor’s best roles outside of Indiana Jones. The complexity of the pictures’ premises made them not only exciting to watch but thought-provoking as well. While the original film was set in 2019, the follow-up was set in 2049 and starred the always capable Ryan Gosling in one of the actor’s most intense roles to date. The new TV sequel will be set 50 years after that picture; hence the show’s title.

The Blade Runner films are philosophical in terms of the themes they present to the audience regarding what compromises humanity. This theme is explored through a fictional examination of mortality. These pictures are unique and powerful examples of how to craft fantastic science fiction stories which have tried to be duplicated over the years to little degree of success. The concept of the original Blade Runner film can be credited to the great writer Philip K. Dick since the movie’s story was based upon a book of his called Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Ridley Scott directed the first Blade Runner picture (considered to be a “cyberpunk” film) so it’s only appropriate for him to be executive producing the new upcoming series. While Denis Villeneuve of Dune fame directed Blade Runner 2049, the Blade Runner franchise is especially known to be a Scott trademark movie similar to the way the original Alien is perceived. Scott was a pioneer for movie makers to bring complex ideas to life and the pictures’ themes are certainly ahead of their time. One can see the potential influence of Scott’s original work which has manifested itself in science fiction movies throughout the years such as 1997’s less action focused Gattaca or even, to a lesser extent, in Strange Days from 1995 before it.

“Advanced replicants” are the focus of the Blade Runner franchise. This new upcoming series will hopefully make its way to a great degree of success as the spin-off series has many science fiction fans in great anticipation!
