Blair Witch Comic-Con Trailer and Poster

The second movie trailer and movie poster for Blair Witch (2016) has been released for the Adam Wingard directed film. It was revealed at the 2016 San Diego Comic Con International that the film formally announced to the world as The Woods was in fact the third film in The Blair Witch Project film franchise (the second film being Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2). The Woods has now been christened Blair Witch.

From a marketing stand-point, I can see why the producers made this move. It automatically sparks more interest in this film than there would normally be.

From a financial stand-point, I can see why the producers made this move. A third Blair Witch film will bring in more money on opening weekend than The Woods might have ordinarily.

It turns out that The Woods was always the third Blair Witch film. Producers called the third The Blair Witch Project film The Woods so it could be created and filmed with far less scrutiny. Their plan worked and amazingly there were no leaks at any step of the production. This was the smartest production move that I have seen in sometime, culminating in the reveal happening at one of the biggest genre events of the year.

Now that the horror film is screening for audiences, the secret can not be kept any longer.

Blair Witch (2016) stars Callie Hernandez, James Allen McCune, Brandon Scott, Wes Robinson, and Corbin Reid. The Woods‘ plot synopsis: a young man named James sets out with his friends to find out what happened “to his sister — the character played by Heather Donahue in the 1999 original film” (The Blair Witch Project).
