Box Office: September 14-16, 2018: THE PREDATOR, THE NUN, A SIMPLE FAVOR, & More

Brian A. Prince The Predator

Box Office September 14-16, 2018

The Predator premiered in the Number One spot at the box office over the weekend with $24 Million. This would be a good opening for a regular action film but not for one with the pedigree of The Predator, especially when one considers the talent in front and behind the camera of the alien / horror film. With this take at the box office and the film trajectory, it is going to be difficult for The Predator to turn a profit.

The Nun was Second with $18.2 Million.

A Simple Favor premiered in Third Place with $16 Million.

White Boy Rick premiered in Fourth Place with 8.8 Million.

Crazy Rich Asians was Third with $8.7 Million for $149.5 Million so far. World-wide, Crazy Rich Asians has made $184.7 Million.

Peppermint, The Meg, Searching, Unbroken: Path to Redemption (which premiered this weekend), and Mission: Impossible – Fallout rounded out the Top Ten respectively.

The films in the Top Ten that opened this weekend at the box office:

The Predator is a 2018 American science fiction action film directed by Shane Black and written by Black and Fred Dekker. It is the fourth installment in the Predator film series (the sixth counting the two Alien vs. Predator films), following Predator (1987), Predator 2 (1990), and Predators (2010). Black had a supporting role in the original film, while John Davis returns as producer from the first three installments. The film stars Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, and Sterling K. Brown and follows a group of PTSD soldiers who must fight off an invading pair of Predators.

A Simple Favor is a 2018 American mystery thriller film directed by Paul Feig from a screenplay by Jessica Sharzer, based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Darcey Bell. The film stars Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, Henry Golding and Andrew Rannells, and follows a small-town blogger who tries to solve the disappearance of her mysterious and rich best friend.

White Boy Rick is a 2018 American crime comedy-drama film directed by Yann Demange and written by Andy Weiss, and Logan and Noah Miller. Based on a true story, the film stars Richie Merritt as Richard Wershe Jr., who in the 1980s became the youngest FBI informant ever at the age of 15. Matthew McConaughey, Bel Powley, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brian Tyree Henry, Rory Cochrane, RJ Cyler, Jonathan Majors, Eddie Marsan, Bruce Dern, and Piper Laurie also star.

Next week sees the release of: The House With A Clock In Its Walls, Life Itself, Fahrenheit 11/9, and a plethora of other mainstream and independent films. Find my predictions on these releases in the weekly The Bottom Line column. A preview: Fahrenheit 11/9 will be Number One at the box office next weekend.
