Box Office: September 7-9, 2018: THE NUN, CRAZY RICH ASIANS, PEPPERMINT, & More

Taissa Farmiga The Nun

Box Office September 7-9, 2018

The Nun premiered in the Number One spot at the box office over the weekend with $53.5 Million. To say that The Nun‘s financial performance at the box office was completely unexpected would be an understatement. I don’t believe anybody saw how well this film would perform in their projections. I also believe that this take came from good branding e.g. The Nun is a part of The Conjuring film franchise. That horror / thriller franchise has a lot of fans.

Crazy Rich Asians was Second at the box office this weekend with $13.6 Million for $136.2 Million so far. World-wide, Crazy Rich Asians has made $164.7 Million.

Peppermint premiered in Third Place with $13.2 Million. Peppermint‘s producers were most-likely hoping the film would premiere in $20 million range.

The Meg was Fourth with $6 Million for $131.5 Million so far. World-wide, The Meg has made $491.9 Million.

Searching was Fifth with $4.5 Million.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Christopher Robin, Operation Finale, Alpha, and BlacKkKlansman rounded out the Top Ten respectively.

The films in the Top Ten that opened this weekend at the box office:

The Nun is a 2018 American gothic supernatural horror film directed by Corin Hardy and written by Gary Dauberman, from a story by Dauberman and James Wan. A spin-off of 2016’s The Conjuring 2, and the fifth installment in The Conjuring Universe, the film stars Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga and Jonas Bloquet. The plot follows a priest and a Catholic novitiate as they uncover an unholy secret in 1952 Romania.

Peppermint is a 2018 American vigilante film directed by Pierre Morel and starring Jennifer Garner. Also starring John Ortiz, John Gallagher Jr., Juan Pablo Raba, and Tyson Ritter, the plot follows a mother who sets out for revenge against the cartel that killed her husband and daughter.

Next week sees the release of: The Predator, A Simple Favor, White Boy Rick, Lizzie, and a plethora of other mainstream and independent films. Find my predictions on these releases in the weekly The Bottom Line column. A preview: The Predator will be Number One at the box office next weekend.
