Bruce Willis Taking a Break From Acting After Aphasia Diagnosis

It has been made known that Bruce Willis has been diagnosed with aphasia and will be taking a hiatus from acting in feature films.

Much adored action hero Bruce Willis, age 67, is going to be sadly taking time off from acting. The actor recently “won” a Golden Raspberry “Razzie” award for several of his smaller titles from 2021. This is not an honor but rather a dishonor to a career but it’s an award that many agree is all in fun. However, the actor has been revealed to have a medical condition called aphasia which is causing him to step down from acting. This condition greatly affects cognitive abilities. Communication which was one of Willis’ greatest assets, is now being affected and his fans are truly saddened for the actor.

Willis came on to the entertainment scene very strongly with the 1985 T.V. show, “Moonlighting.” He made a comedy movie with Kim Basinger called Blind Date in 1987 which did decent business at the box-office before he hit it big playing an action hero in the Die Hard action pictures. His most notable achievements may be his work from 1998-1999 where he had not one, but two, major motion pictures. In 1998, Willis starred in the blockbuster science fiction film, Armageddon, which grossed $201 million domestically and in 1999, a “little” film with a surprise ending called The Sixth Sense made over $293 million at the box-office. Both smash films earned “A-” CinemaScore grades with The Sixth Sense an Academy Award nominee for Best Picture.

Some of you may be stopping and wondering whether or not Pulp Fiction wasn’t more noteworthy for Willis than the two aforementioned films. Pulp Fiction, released in 1994, only earned $107 million and a “B+” CinemaScore grade despite all its critical respect and Academy Award nomination love. In fact, Willis’s segment in Pulp Fiction was only about a third of the film.

Fans will miss Willis’s recent foray into action pictures. Even though some of these films have skipped theaters, they have still appealed to his fans. Gasoline Alley was released last month and is $6.99 to watch online on certain sites. That film co-stars Luke Wilson and Devon Sawa.

Aphasia is “the loss of ability to understand or express speech.” Willis’s family gave the news of his departure from acting in the movies.

Willis has left behind a career of many great films throughout his career as well as some box-office disappointments (The Bonfire of the Vanities and Hudson Hawk come to mind) but always was an actor of integrity who, for the most part, made movies that, even if they failed, seemed to have the best interests of the viewer in mind. His absence in films will be felt by Hollywood.
