BUGONIA (2025): Yorgos Lanthimos’ Latest Collaboration with Emma Stone Sets Release Date

Emma Stone Poor Things

Emma Stone Movie Gets Release Date from Focus Features

Focus Features has announced October 24th as the premiere date for the new Emma Stone movie, Bugonia.

Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos have paired up again for their latest collaboration, Bugonia. This upcoming release is going to be from Focus Features which outbid Searchlight for the new picture’s rights. Lanthimos and Stone previously teamed up for The Favourite, Poor Things (for which Stone won a Best Actress Oscar), and the pair also made Kinds of Kindness, an oddball film which fizzled at the box-office last summer. Is the fourth time going to be another charm for this artistic team? Time will tell. There is a planned limited release for the new picture on October 24th which will be followed by a wider release on October 31st which makes sense given the film is an oddball picture that could appeal to art house fans on Halloween. The original release date for the picture was November 7th.

Bugonia is actually a remake of a South Korean comedy called Save the Green Planet. This new picture is going to be about a pair who kidnap a CEO they believe is really an alien out to cause harm to Earth. Among the cast members other than Stone are Jesse Plemons and Alicia Silverstone. Plemons also appeared in the mediocre Lanthimos effort, Kinds of Kindness. Silverstone is getting into the artsy movie mode lately as this film will be following on the heels of her fairly recent Tribeca effort, Perpetrator, in which the actress played a very unusual role.

Expect Bugonia to appeal to fans of both Stone and Lanthimos. Focus is most likely expecting bigger returns at the box-office than Poor Things conjured up. For all its Oscar hype, Poor Things only made a little more than $34 million domestically although it saved face with over $83 million in receipts internationally. Bugonia could make somewhere between $35 and $40 million if it’s marketed properly although it could wind up as more of a specialty release for Focus depending on how the reviews and audience reactions turn out.

Focus Features has never been a studio afraid of taking risks. They are currently in the process of putting out Wes Anderson’s latest, The Phoenician Scheme, later this month. A lot of Bugonia‘s potential success really rides on the film’s ability to work as mainstream entertainment and its possibility to have Oscar prospects as well. Though the box-office disappointment of Kinds of Kindness proves the pair of Lanthimos and Stone could be an acquired taste if their project is too offbeat, many are still anticipating this upcoming picture to be a significant improvement over the last one.
