CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 (2016): Robert Downey Jr. Joins Film

Captain America Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr. to Reprise Iron Man Role in Captain America 3. In a surprising move by Marvel, Robert Downey Jr. is close to joining the cast of Captain America 3 to reprise his role as Iron Man with the film adapting the Civil War storyline.

Variety first reported that Tony Stark would be a part of Captain America 3 as the Marvel Cinematic Universe goes into Phase Three. Just about a week ago, Robert Downey Jr. made hints about when we would see Iron Man again and said he would return in a big way. With this announcement, fans have finally got their answer as we see Robert team up with Chris Evans for Captain America’s third solo film. It may not be the solo film we are looking for, but at least we know where Tony Stark will be after Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The next Captain America film will also be adapting elements from the Civil War crossover event, which is already set to launch a new comic book based on it next summer. For those who don’t know, the Civil War series follows the US government as they pass the Superhero Registration Act, which is made to have superheroes act under official regulation, similar to police officers. Tony Stark supports the program but Steve Rogers has some problems with the new regime forcing him and others supporting him to be on the run. The new order forces some of the heroes on opposing sides, with Tony Stark possibly being a villain of sorts for supporting the new law. With this new role for Downey, we can see this playing out in future Marvel films.

The Civil War came out in 2006 as a seven-issue limited comic book series that was written by Mark Miller, known for his work on Wanted and Kick-Ass. The comics have been known for exploring themes like liberty, moral responsibility, and civil order.

Joe and Anthony Russo return to direct Captain America 3, with a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The film is scheduled to release on May 6, 2016.

So it looks like a war is coming between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers in this film. Are you guys excited to see Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America 3?
