CHI-RAQ (2015) Movie Trailer: Spike Lee Takes On Chicago Crime-Rate

Chi-Raq Movie Trailer

Chi-Raq Movie Trailer. Spike Lee‘s Chi-Raq (2015) movie trailer stars Samuel L. JacksonNick Cannon and John CusackChi-Raq‘s plot synopsis: “A modern day adaptation of the ancient Greek play Lysistrata by Aristophanes, set against the backdrop of gang violence in Chicago.”

Spike Lee has made some of the Great American Films. Think Do The Right Thing (1989), think Summer of Sam (1999), think 25th Hour (2002) – my personal favourite. He has definitely earned his place in the annals of film history, and has contributed some beautiful stuff.

Lately, however, Lee seems to have lost his touch. He’s been meandering between low-budget films, small, quick projects like Katt Williams‘ comedy special, and a remake of Old-Boy in-between all that. There is no clear trajectory, thought, or foresight here. And that’s ok – but it certainly doesn’t inspire confidence in me or any other Spike Lee fan in having him return to his glory days. This latest trailer for Chi-Raq doesn’t look too good, either. It’s very theatrical, a heightened reality – a combination of things that could possibly work, but in the context of covering the murder-rate in Chicago, it just seems…misplaced.

Maybe I’m wrong! Maybe this will be his Southland Tales, and people will love it five years from now.

Take a look at the trailer for yourself.

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
