Warner Bros. is moving forward with a sequel to the 2005 film Constantine. The original film, based on DC Comics’ Hellblazer comic book, was directed by Francis Lawrence and was written by Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello.

Francis Lawrence will return to direct the sequel film with Akiva Goldsman writing the screenplay.

Regarding the new J.J. Abrams-produced Constantine TV series, HBO Max has officially passed on it. Now that HBO Max has passed on the series, the DC Comics TV show will be shopped to other streaming services.

On Constantine

“Adapted from the DC comics, John Constantine is an exorcist trying to tip the scales in the battle between good and evil in his favor. Able to see the demons and angels influencing regular folks, Constantine is driven to send every last demon to hell thus solidifying his place in heaven because, ‘What would you do if you were sentenced to a prison where half the inmates were put there by you?'”

My Thoughts

I saw Constantine in theaters when it premiered in 2005. Constantine is an okay film, a single-watch film. It did not bomb in theaters but it was not a success either, making $230.9 Million world-wide. That barely covers the production budget and the marketing budget. With two big stars leading the film and it being a comic book adaptation, people were expecting more (financial and story-wise) and they didn’t get it.

HBO Max made the right call on the new Constantine TV series. The original TV series only lasted one season on NBC. HBO Max is extremely risk adverse these days with funding projects. Why risk a new production budget on a comic book character that already failed once when adapted to the small screen.
