Latest David Cronenberg Film Starts Filming in Greece

The newest science-fiction thriller from acclaimed director David Cronenberg is titled Crimes of the Future and has started production.

Legendary filmmaker David Cronenberg has made a lot of memorable films. He is a director who possesses fierce independence and integrity. His latest film, Crimes of the Future, has started shooting. It showcases Cronenberg regular, Viggo Mortensen, who appeared in Cronenberg’s movies, A History of Violence and Eastern Promises from 2005 and 2007, respectfully. Mortensen is starring in the picture which also features Kristen Stewart, Scott Speedman and Lea Seydoux. You may remember Kristen Stewart as the female lead from the successful Twilight films. Shooting on Cronenberg’s new film has begun in Athens, Greece and will take place until September.

Mortensen is already speaking out on the film, citing that the story seems as if it was a collaboration with Samuel Beckett and William Burroughs, according to sources. This new picture is an original screenplay by Cronenberg and his first wholly original work since eXistenZ back in 1999.

Crimes of the Future is set in a not too far away future where evolution changes humans by a metamorphosis called “Accelerated Evolution Syndrome” that changes human beings’ “biological makeup.” Some accept the changes while others try to control it.

Neon is in charge of U.S. distribution of Cronenberg’s upcoming movie. Neon recently released the highly regarded Nicolas Cage film, Pig. Other popular Neon movies include Colossal, I Tonya and the Oscar-winning Parasite.

Cronenberg’s new film has a score composed by Howard Shore. The Oscar-winning Shore is best known for his work in The Silence of the Lambs and has worked with Cronenberg many time before on films such as the 1980’s remake of The Fly, Dead Ringers and the 1997 release, Crash.

Films like Crash, which was released in the United States in 1997, have proven that Cronenberg always goes the extra mile in his films to push boundaries. Crash received an NC-17 rating when it was released and polarized viewers with its heavy, offbeat premise. Cronenberg’s movies often leave viewers mesmerized through his films’ thought-provoking story lines. Such should be the case with Crimes of the Future.

It is a widely known fact that the acclaimed Cronenberg doesn’t have any Academy Awards or even any Oscar nominations to speak of and that fact was recently brought to the public’s attention by Mortensen. Could this new film, Crimes of the Future, be his ticket to the Oscars? Only time will tell. Keep your eyes peeled for this prestigious project which will receive more coverage as it goes through the filming process and is eventually unveiled to the public.
