A Black Swan Musical is a Possibility

Acclaimed filmmaker Darren Aronofsky has an idea to turn his hit 2010 film, Black Swan, into a musical.

Natalie Portman won the Academy Award for Best Actress by a landslide for her tremendous work in the formidable dramatic movie, Black Swan. That 2010 movie was nominated for multiple Oscars that year, but Portman was undeniably the best part of the picture. In any event, the role Portman played in the film, Nina Sayers, is the role almost any actress would fight for, and it may just be recast for a musical version of the movie, Black Swan, if the film’s director Darren Aronofsky has anything to say about it.

Aronofsky has reported his wishes to make a musical version of his wildly successful Oscar-nominated picture, Black Swan. That film made $106 million domestically and $222 million internationally. It was even more of a success when one considers the dark tone of the movie. Let’s face it–the movie didn’t have the happiest ending unless one sees the conclusion as positive for Nina’s accomplishment to the be the best she could possibly be actually happened. This film also had a juicy supporting part which was the role of Nina’s main competitor, Lily, played by Mila Kunis.

Centered around a production of Swan Lake, the ballet centered thriller toyed with viewers’ minds as it presented scenes which may have been happening in an alternate reality. It definitely caused some mixed opinions when the movie originally came out although the majority opinion was that the picture was something of a masterpiece.

Aronofsky believes it’s “tricky” to make a musical of Broadway’s caliber, cinematically speaking. However, he has found himself inspired by none other than the great Lin-Manuel Miranda in wanting to make this project happen. It could take something of a small miracle to get this project off the ground but it could and should happen.

Currently, Aronofsky has a film in theaters which stars Brendan Fraser called The Whale which has landed Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations for Best Actor for Fraser. This film did tremendously well at the specialty box-office this past weekend positioning Fraser as a front-runner for the Best Actor Oscar. When Aronofsky directed Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler a couple of years before Black Swan came out, it almost led Rourke to an Academy Award victory. At the next Oscars ceremony, Fraser could emerge victorious.

Black Swan is the perfect project to make as a musical if the film version is any indication. That’s because the costumes, the choreography and the story line were masterfully weaved together to create a truly haunting and energetic experience. Let’s hope that Aronofsky gets the Black Swan musical together in the not-too-distant future.
