Director Hayao Miyazaki is Retiring after THE WIND RISES Releases

Hayao Miyazaki

Oscar-winning director, Hayao Miyazaki, has announced his intention to retire. Miyazaki’s animation studio (Studio Ghibli) says The Wind Rises, in competition at the Venic Film Festival, will be his last film. Koju Hoshino announced Miyazaki’s intention to retire Sunday, but declined to take questions deferring to a news conference next week in Tokyo. “He wants to say goodbye to all of you,” the Studio Ghibli president said.

Miyazaki was not in Venice for the film premiere. He instead stayed in Japan for the domestic release.

The Wind Rises, Miyazaki’s 11th feature film, is a fantasy-filled look at the man who designed Japan’s World War II fighter planes.

Miyazaki’s career spans over fifty years, he has attained international acclaim as a maker of anime feature films and, along with Isao Takahata, co-founded Studio Ghibli, a film and animation studio. Miyazaki, 72, is one of animation’s most admired and successful directors. He won an Oscar for Spirited Away in 2003 and a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in 2005.

His most recent film,  From Up on Poppy Hill, was released in 2011. The film won in 2012 for Animation of the Year at the 35th Japan Academy Prize and also won Animation of the Year at the 11th Tokyo Anime Award. It won the Best Foreign Animation/Family Trailer at the 14th Golden Trailer Awards.

His son, Goro Miyazaki, follows in his father’s footsteps in the animation world. He has directed two films, Tales from Earthsea and From Up on Poppy Hill.

The Wind Rises is shown in the main competition section of the 70th Venice International Film Festival. It will have its North American release at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.  Walt Disney Motion Pictures will distribute the film in North America through its Touchstone Pictures banner.
