Disney+ has 86.8 Million Subscribers and Price Hike in March 2021

At The Walt Disney Company’s 2020 Investor Day, Disney announced that their Disney+ streaming platform has garnered 86.8 Million paid subscribers. That far exceeds industry expectations and even Disney’s internal expectations. Much of this expedited subscriber growth is due to the Covid-19 pandemic lock-down and extended periods of at-home time that no one could have anticipated.

The Subscribers

Across Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, Walt Disney now has a total of more than 137 million paying subscribers.

During the Investor Day presentation, the company announced that, as of December 2, its portfolio of direct-to-consumer services has exceeded a total of 137 million global paid subscriptions, including 11.5 million ESPN+ subscribers, 38.8 million Hulu subscribers, and a staggering 86.8 million Disney+ subscribers since its launch in November 2019. After greatly exceeding expectations, The Walt Disney Company shared guidance that it now expects its streaming services to hit 300-350 million total subscriptions by fiscal 2024, driven primarily by a significant increase in content output. Disney+ alone is targeting to release more than 100 titles per year.

The Price Hike

Because of this success and the slate of upcoming original programming that it will be releasing in the next two years on Disney+, Disney is raising Disney+’s monthly subscription cost from $6.99 to $7.99 starting on March 27, 2021.

Beginning March 26, 2021, Disney+ will be priced in the U.S. at $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year, while the Disney Bundle with Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ will be priced at $13.99 per month.
