DUNE: MESSIAH: Third Installment of DUNE is Looking to Start Filming This Summer
Dune: Messiah to Go in Front of the Cameras This Summer
Denis Villeneuve‘s long-awaited film based on Frank Herbert‘s Dune: Messiah will start shooting this summer if all goes as planned.
It has been revealed that Denis Villeneuve’s third Dune picture is seeking to start filming during the summer of 2025. This film will mark the end of Paul Atreides (Academy Award nominee for A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet)’s compelling and personal story. While the title of the new film isn’t 100% assured to be Dune: Messiah, IMDb has listed it as such which suggests that it is being considered as a potential title.
In the book, Atreides has been ruling as Emperor for over a decade, and the epic story tells of the obstacles Atreides faces in terms of changing the world he sought out to create and achieved. There’s much more complexity to the story line but that is a general overview of what happens at the core of Herbert’s story.
Chalamet’s co-star in these Dune films is Zendaya who will seemingly be able to be available this summer to shoot the new Dune. She’s also working on another epic picture for Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey. This third installment of Dune could end up coming out in 2027 as a December 2026 release date seems like it could take a lot of rushing by the filmmakers to accommodate. Still, you never know.
Villeneuve has turned these Dune pictures into event movies which have thrived financially and artistically. While the original Dune premiered on HBO Max the same day it did in theaters, it proved to be successful against all possible obstacles, even going on to get major love from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
As the first Dune earned $108 million domestically around the time of the pandemic and the second movie made a whopping $282 million in the US and Canada, it is clear audiences are just getting warmed up for the third movie and should turn out in droves to see the conclusion of Atreides’ powerful tale. Meanwhile, Chalamet is waiting for Oscar night to see if he can pull off a Best Actor win for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
A story about the power of free will, Dune: Messiah will be the type of adaptation that could change the way Hollywood presents blockbuster sequels. Dune: Part Two was nothing short of brilliant with an underrated turn from Austin Butler and a love story between Zendaya and Chalamet’s characters which broke viewers’ hearts and then some. Can Villeneuve top the excellent first two pictures with his third installment of Dune? Time will certainly tell. It’s a definite maybe.
