Baz Luhrmann Returns with Movie Based on the Life of Elvis

2002 Directors Guild of America nominated filmmaker Baz Luhrmann‘s first film since 2013, Elvis, will be released in theaters this June.

Director Baz Luhrmann’s latest project is going to be unleashed this coming June and a trailer will be unveiled to the public tomorrow. As the King of Rock and Roll himself, Elvis Presley, may say, “Thank you very much.” Fans of Luhrmann have been waiting anxiously to see the filmmaking genius’ first feature film since 2013’s literary adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald masterpiece The Great Gatsby. Tomorrow, they will get a first look at the movie through the unveiling of the trailer for the movie which is set for release in theaters on June 24th.

Luhrmann was nominated by the Directors Guild of America for his work on the 2001 masterpiece Moulin Rouge! but got shockingly snubbed by the Academy Award nominations that year. With Elvis, the director is back doing what we admire him most for–making movies with great acting and soundtracks. Tom Hanks will star in the picture as Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The King, himself, will be played by Austin Butler which was a surprising casting decision. Miles Teller and Ansel Elgort, among others, were also considered for the role of Elvis.

Besides Butler and Hanks, Luhrmann’s new picture will showcase turns from the great character actors Kodi Smit-McPhee and Kelvin Harrison Jr. Both of these co-stars had stellar films last year. Smit-McPhee is currently up for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for The Power of the Dog while Harrison Jr. won many fans (whether they saw the film or not) for his prominent role in the soon-to-be-officially released Cyrano. In Elvis, Smit-McPhee will be playing Jimmie Rodgers while Harrison Jr. will serve as the great B.B. King.

Ever since Strictly Ballroom in 1992, audiences have eagerly awaited Luhrmann’s films from William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet to Australia to The Great Gatsby. Although many consider Strictly Ballroom to be his finest hour, he has won over the mainstream public the most for his 2001 Academy Award nominated (for Best Picture), Moulin Rouge! which became a Broadway musical.

The script for Elvis was written by Moulin Rouge! co-writer Craig Pearce and, of course, Luhrmann himself. While it is very much a biopic in the vein of Bohemian Rhapsody or Rocketman, Luhrmann’s signature style will certainly elevate it above your standard biographical drama. June is a good time to release a film for Luhrmann as Moulin Rouge! was released wide in June of 2001 and went on to see several Oscar nominations. Could Luhrmann’s new upcoming film help him get a Best Director nomination from the Academy next year? We will see soon when Elvis is unveiled on June 24th!
