Film Review: Shelter (2026): Jason Statham’s Best Action Picture in Years Has Intense Situations and Well-Drawn Characters

Shelter Review
Shelter (2026) Film Review, a movie directed by Ric Roman Waugh, written by Ward Parry and starring Jason Statham, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Bill Nighy, Naomi Ackie, Harriet Walter, Michael Shaeffer, Anna Crilly, Eugenia Caruso, Celine Buckens, Bally Gill, Bronson Webb, Laurent Buson, Bryan Vigier, Rodaidh Findiay, Ryan Fletcher, Tomi May and Daniel Mays.
Filmmaker Ric Roman Waugh’s action-packed Jason Statham vehicle, Shelter, ranks among one of the star’s very best action films. This film is a tense thriller filled with crackling dramatic scenes that greatly intensify the picture’s suspenseful chase sequences.
Statham is cast opposite the young Bodhi Rae Breathnach in a story of a recluse named Mason (Statham) who has a secret past and lives on a Scottish island. A man (Michael Shaeffer) resides close by and sends his niece, Jessie (Breathnach), to sporadically help Mason with supplies. When Jessie finds her life in jeopardy while out at sea in the middle of a fierce storm, the solemn and intense Mason heroically saves her life although he is unable to save the uncle.
Mason has a pet dog that Jessie bonds with. However, because her foot is injured, Mason must travel into town to get supplies to help her heal. Once he is captured on a surveillance camera and is mistaken by authorities as a terrorist, the action kicks into high gear and the relentless nature of the film makes it one of the most successful entries in Statham’s sometimes checkered career. This is by far the most accomplished action film Statham has ever starred in.
Character actor Bill Nighy is well-cast as the villain, Manafort, who changed Mason’s identity so Mason would be killed if he ever were to resurface. It turns out that Mason once didn’t kill an innocent target he was chosen to eliminate, and he’s been on the run ever since. As the plot progresses, another agent, Roberta (Naomi Ackie), gets immersed in the complexity of the situation and the film advances with Manafort’s attempts to send an assassin out to kill Mason once and for all. This film never comes up for air and is all the stronger an action picture as a result.
What is particularly impressive about Shelter is the relationship that is formed between Mason and Jessie. Mason puts his life and security on the line to save her even though these two characters don’t get along at the film’s initial outset. One of the best action scenes is set in a London nightclub where Mason tries to get someone who he knows from his past to get Jessie the papers and transportation to get out of the country safely. Goons appear to try to thwart Mason and the action that ensues will leave the viewer breathless.
Statham’s performance wouldn’t seem like anything out of the ordinary at first, but the more the picture goes on, the more Statham’s character reveals layers to the role that shed light on his past, present and future as Mason risks it all for Jessie. Bodhi Rae Breathnach is a perfect Jessie. She starts out scared of Mason and even keeps a knife by her side at one point to protect herself, but she soon discovers that Mason does, indeed, have her best interests in mind.
Breathnach brings sadness and emotion to the part she plays and emerges with a first-rate turn as she plays off Statham wonderfully. There’s enough depth to the relationship that develops on-screen between these two characters to potentially tug at the heartstrings of viewers who are open to action films with well-drawn characters and emotional complexity.
Nighy is a villain that you will certainly want to root against thanks to the performer’s character’s vicious nature. Ackie is solid in her small, but pivotal, part in the action here. Shelter is so good because Statham is the action hero “every man” that makes a movie like this one compelling to watch. Almost any action film audience will appreciate the sequences where Mason wipes out those who jeopardize the life of his new young friend. I don’t remember a more precise action film that has come out in the past two years as this one. There’s not a boring moment in Shelter and that makes it rise to the top of the list of action/thriller movies to seek out. There are fast and furious scenes of tension that blend well with the more sympathetic moments the movie offers towards the moving conclusion.
Another notable accomplishment of Shelter is its stellar plot development. This movie moves fast, but doesn’t cut back on character development and plot development to get to the action scenes. This film feels like it takes its time to build its story through its relatable characters and tense situations. Therefore, when the viewer gets to the action scenes, those sequences are that much stronger because there is a genuine investment in the characters that develops early on. Due to the strength of the performances by the two central players in the film, Shelter is one of the best action pictures in some time. It features the reliable Statham in fine form.
