GAME OF THRONES: Season 2 Casts Gwendoline Christie (Brienne Tarth)

Gwendoline Christie

Gwendoline Christie has been cast in Season 2 of Game of Thrones. Gwendoline Christie will play Brienne Tarth in Game of Thrones Season 2. With Season 2 of HBO‘s Game of Thrones beginning filming this month, we should be getting more casting news as the weeks go on.

Gwendoline Christie will be playing “Brienne Tarth is the only daughter and heiress of Lord Selwyn Tarth of Evenfall Hall; she had three siblings, none of which survived childhood. Larger and stronger than most men, Brienne is a skilled warrior and longs to be a knight. She has an awkward personality, but is also honest and stubborn. She holds a naïvely idealized notion of knighthood despite the insults she receives from many knights, who call her “Brienne the Beauty” to mock her ugliness. She is also known as “Brienne, the Maid of Tarth”, but her most common and neutral nickname is “Brienne of Tarth”, as she is both from the House and island of Tarth.”

For those unaware of whom Gwendoline Christie is:

Gwendoline Christie is a British actress. She graduated from drama school in 2005 and lives in London. Her striking height, 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m), motivated photographer Polly Borland to make her the subject of a noted series of photographs. Christie’s theatrical career includes a performance as the Queen in Shakespeare’s Cymbeline and “standing out” as Lucifer in Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus (2010). On screen, Christie played supporting roles in Terry Gilliam’s 2009 film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and in the BBC TV production The Seven Ages of Britain, among others.

On her casting:

George R.R. Martin wrote on his official blog: “The day the first batch of auditions went up for the role, we looked at a dozen actresses who were reading for Brienne and one actress who was Brienne.”  He added: “Gwendoline gave a great reading, and her look was just perfect.”
