STX Obtains Worldwide Rights for Greenland Sequel

STX has paid a total of $75 million for the worldwide rights to Greenland: Migration, the sequel to 2020’s hit Greenland.

Gerard Butler starred in a thrilling disaster film titled Greenland last year. It didn’t get a traditional theatrical release in the United States due to the pandemic but, nevertheless, the film grossed over $52 million internationally. Now, in an effort to cover the film’s $75 million production cost, the rights to the new film have been pre-sold to STX for $25 million domestically and $50 million internationally.

Butler, who came on to the movie scene big time in 2006’s epic action picture, 300, will return to star in the sequel to Greenland alongside his co-star from the first film, Morena Baccarin. The new film will be about their characters’ efforts to secure a new home after having been kept safe in a Greenland bunker during a global apocalypse as seen in the first film. Butler and Baccarin portrayed characters known as the Garrity’s and had a young son named Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) in the original film. The movie, which cost $35 million to make, had universal appeal during the pandemic and won over many viewers. It was a roller coaster ride disaster thriller.

Greenland director Ric Roman Waugh will be back on board directing the upcoming sequel. European financier Anton is financing the film as is Butler and Alan Siegel’s G-BASE. Thunder Road Pictures will also produce. The sequel will go into production in 2022. STX  successfully rolled out the first Greenland movie and should be able to make this upcoming sequel an event movie.

Butler’s previous 2017 disaster film, Geostorm, was a financial and critical disappointment domestically (it did make more money internationally, though) so Greenland surprised many viewers who found the 2020 picture to be surprisingly moving and entertaining. Greenland currently holds a 78% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

While STX has made a big investment in purchasing the rights to Greenland: Migration, viewers could be as satisfied with the results as they were with the first film and that could lead to a third film. There’s no doubt viewers find Butler a relatable everyman and his role in the first film was definitely among Butler’s better recent performances.

The deal STX conducted happened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and was the biggest deal to happen there this year. Greenland has many fans and its sequel should be equally successful. There is no date in regards to when, exactly, the film will be released thus far.
