On October 31st, Connery passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 90. While he has played many notable roles — including Indy’s father in the third Indiana Jones movie as well as featuring in Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Untouchables (1987), and The Hunt for Red October (1990) — he gained the most popularity for his role as James Bond in six Eon Productions films: Dr. No (1962), From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), Casino Royale (1967), and You Only Live Twice (1967). Now Ford has honored his late co-star in a comment to Variety:

“He was my father…not in life…but in Indy 3” Ford said. “You don’t know pleasure until someone pays you to take Sean Connery for a ride in the side car of a Russian motorcycle bouncing along a bumpy, twisty mountain trail and getting to watch him squirm. God, we had fun — if he’s in heaven, I hope they have golf courses. Rest in peace, dear friend.”

Ford is not the only Hollywood denizen to pay tribute to Connery, with others including fellow Bond actors, Daniel Craig, and Pierce Brosnan offering their condolences as well as Hugh Jackman, Sam Neill, Kevin Smith and George Lucas, who said “[Connery] will always hold a special place in my heart as Indy’s dad.”

Craig said “It is with such sadness that I heard of the passing of one of the true greats of cinema … Sir Sean Connery will be remembered as Bond and so much more. He defined an era and a style. The wit and charm he portrayed on screen could be measured in mega watts; he helped create the modern blockbuster.” Craig added that “Wherever he is, I hope there is a golf course.”

Last Crusade was actually the only film Ford and Connery worked on together. While Lucasfilm tried to bring him back for the sequel, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, he turned them down. As a result, the elder Dr. Jones was written as having passed away after the events of Last Crusade. Connery said that “I spoke with Spielberg, but it didn’t work. It was not that generous a part, worth getting back into the harness and go for.”
