A sequel to 2007’s I Am Legend has been a long time in the making and, now, filmmaker Steven Caple Jr. is in discussions to come on board as director of the upcoming movie.

When Will Smith starred in the 2007 box-office goldmine, I Am Legend, his fans took note of the science fiction film’s thought-provoking themes and compelling action scenes. While the fact that Smith will most likely be returning for I Am Legend 2 has been circulating for a bit of time, the director of the first film (Francis Lawrence) will most likely be replaced by Steven Caple Jr. of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts fame.

The 2007 movie centered on a plague which leaves a scientist walking the empty streets of New York City with his dog while fighting for survival in the interim. This film scooped up $256 million in domestic tickets sales and another $329 million internationally which made a sequel inevitable. It was officially announced that it would happen a couple of years back but, now, the process of actually getting the picture to the screen seems to be moving faster with the announcement that Caple Jr. will probably be helming the forthcoming picture.

Say what you will about Transformers: Rise of the Beasts but it was immensely entertaining and collected $438 million in worldwide ticket sales, $157 million of which came from domestic box-office receipts. The original I Am Legend earned just a “B” CinemaScore while Transformers: Rise of the Beasts received a much stronger “A-” CinemaScore mark. That hints that Steven Caple Jr. may make I Am Legend 2 a better-rated sequel than its original counterpart.

Francis Lawrence, the director of the original I Am Legend may be more interested in dabbling with making another sequel, Constantine 2, as sources suggest. This opens up the window for Caple Jr. to deliver a potential box-office hit for Warner Bros. which could also be a real crowd-pleaser.

Besides Smith, Michael B. Jordan is set to star in I Am Legend 2 which makes the star power for the sequel pretty unbeatable. While it’s unclear who will have the bigger role, early guesses suggest that Jordan would have more screen time in the picture. Smith had the screen pretty much to himself in the first film so it’s only fair that he passes the torch to Jordan. Exact script details are a little bit indefinite at this time but, either way, to see Smith and Jordan in a sequel to one of the most ambitious films of its time is something that is definitely worth waiting for. More will be revealed as news develops on this exciting project.
