Joy Movie Trailer 2. David O. Russell‘s Joy (2015) movie trailer 2 stars Jennifer LawrenceBradley Cooper and Robert De NiroJoy‘s plot synopsis: “Joy is the story of a family across four generations and the woman who rises to become founder and matriarch of a powerful family business dynasty.”

You may have caught a glimpse at the poster for David O. Russell’s new film, or even seen the initial trailer. Well, today we’ve been treated to another one.

This trailer gives me a serious Paul Thomas Anderson vibe. I’m not quite sure what it is – the beautiful cinematography, the color palette, the steady tracking shots floating through set – it reminds of Magnolia. Regardless of comparisons to other films or directors, O. Russell has always been more than competent. You may have noticed a cut-off from “early O. Russell” to his later, Academy-recognized work. Some are over the moon at this transition, this “maturing” and blossoming into the director he was meant to be. Others, like myself, often times miss his earlier, off-kilter, rough-around-the-edges work (Three KingsI Heart HuckabeesFlirting With Disaster).

In any case, it seems like Jennifer Lawrence may finally have a role that suits her talents. This story spans years, is about her coming to terms with life, balancing family, love, and finding her place. She’s a great actress, and this script may finally give her the chance to prove her ability to handle weighty roles such as this.

I’ll always give O. Russell’s films a shot, but frankly, I’m somewhat non-plussed about this project. What caught my eye most is the cinematography, the colors and tracking shots. It also reminded me to re-watch Boogie Nights and Magnolia.

What do you think?

According to Slashfilm, “JOY is the wild story of a family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and enterprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces. Jennifer Lawrence stars, with Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, Elisabeth Röhm and Dascha Polanco. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, Joy defies genre to tell a story of family, loyalty, and love.”

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
