KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (2023): Martin Scorsese’s Latest Will Get a Wide Release Instead of a Platform One

Apple TV’s Scorsese Film Set to Go Wide

Killers of the Flower Moon, the latest Martin Scorsese picture, will launch nationwide on October 20th at theaters all over the world.

As the actors’ and writers’ strikes go on, high-profile movie stars won’t be seen promoting their projects. However, Paramount and Apple are confident that audiences are still going to want to see the Cannes Film Festival favorite, Killers of the Flower Moon, which received a nine-minute standing ovation at Cannes. Director Martin Scorsese and the film’s star, Leonardo DiCaprio, seemingly can’t do anything wrong when they work together. The reviews on this new collaboration of theirs are so uniformly positive that this could be another ticket to the Oscars for both talents.

Heavy hitters Robert De Niro and Brendan Fraser co-star in the upcoming Scorsese movie. Lily Gladstone, the actress who appears in Killers of the Flower Moon, is said to, perhaps, be Oscar nomination worthy in this upcoming film so all eyes will be on her performance.

Though the movie has a lengthy running time of over three hours, it appears that this movie could be called as one of the 10 best films of 2023 by both film critics and at the Academy Award nominations. Oppenheimer could, theoretically, be the reason that Paramount and Apple changed their initial plan to roll out Killers of the Flower Moon in a limited platform style release on October 6th. Oppenheimer was long, and Oscar-worthy too but the film’s studio, Universal, didn’t care and that film was released wide immediately and has made quite a bit of money at the box-office.

With Killers of the Flower Moon now opening worldwide on October 20th, it will make excellent counter-programming to the big Halloween horror movie, The Exorcist: Believer. That new Exorcist picture will be entering its second weekend of play on the 20th but should continue to go strong at the box-office thanks to the momentum surrounding it and the fact that it has been positioned as a Halloween scare fest.

Martin Scorsese won an Oscar for his 2006 Leonardo DiCaprio starrer, The Departed but the director will face stiff competition from Oppenheimer director Christoper Nolan who has yet to win an Oscar of his own. These two movies will butt heads at Oscar time but it’s almost certain to be a race to the finish to see which film (if either) will ultimately take home the gold.

The new release strategy of Paramount and Apple should prove to be a profitable one. Non-horror fans will have a movie to see in late October that will keep them satisfied if Killers of the Flower Moon turns out to be as excellent as critics say it is.
