KNIVES OUT 2: Sequel to Rian Johnson-Directed Murder Mystery Film in Development

Knives Out 2 in Development with Director Rian Johnson

Knives Out director Rian Johnson has stated that a sequel to his popular whodunnit is in the works.

Johnson told the Hollywood Reporter of his eagerness to follow up his hit film this past weekend. It would focus on the work of sultry Southern detective Benoit Blanc, portrayed by Daniel Craig, as he works to crack another case. The original takes inspiration from Agatha Christie-type mysteries, and follows Blanc’s interrogations of the estranged family members when their wealthy patriarch is found murdered.

Although no script is formally written yet, Johnson’s producer Ram Bergman says Craig himself is sold on the idea. “Daniel had so much fun doing it and he wants to do more,” said Bergman. Lionsgate, the studio behind Knives Out, has not officially greenlit a sequel but they are eager to read a script.

From a business standpoint a Knives Out sequel seems like a surefire hit. The original has proven to be a runaway success, as it’s both a critical darling and an audience favorite. According to Box Office Mojo it has already grossed nearly $250M worldwide ($132M domestic) on a $40M budget. It has been labeled one of the Top 10 Films of the year by both AFI and the National Board of Review (also winning “Best Ensemble” from the latter), and garnered three Golden Globe nominations: Best Musical or Comedy, Best Actor (Craig), and Best Actress (Ana de Armas).

While a Knives Out sequel may not reunite the Thrombey family, we can most likely expect another powerhouse ensemble. Between hits like Looper and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Johnson’s burgeoning repertoire will surely allow him all the star power he can muster.

Knives Out stars Craig, de Armas, Christopher Plummer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, and Chris Evans. It is currently in wide release.
