Mel Gibson Is Negotiating Returning For Action Sequel

The former box-office superstar Mel Gibson may be directing a new fifth film in the Lethal Weapon franchise.

Call it the “passion” of Mel Gibson. The Oscar-winning star and director of 1995’s Braveheart is looking towards the definite possibility of directing a new Lethal Weapon picture. It’s been a while since the one-time box-office sensation has starred in a Lethal Weapon film–over two decades, in fact. When Gibson stated in an interview in London that he was thinking of directing a new installment in the action series, eyebrows were definitely raised. Sources have revealed that he may both star in and direct a fifth film in the hugely profitable move series.

This past summer, the movie world lost a legendary director, Richard Donner, who unfortunately passed away. He was the man who was known for directing the other Lethal Weapon pictures. It is only appropriate for the torch to be passed on to Gibson to continue the success of the series and direct it himself being that he was the star of the four other movies in the franchise.

It is said that Donner and Gibson had a fifth movie in the series in development for years. This upcoming picture, if it happens, would be made for streamer HBO Max.

It was recently made known that Gibson has a prominent role in the latest picture in the John Wick series and many are excited to see the actor make a return to his action hero roots after starring in a slew of movies which did not have much of a theatrical release to speak of. Anyone go see Fatman? Was it even playing?

Gibson suffered somewhat of a downward spiral after directing the smash hit from 2004, The Passion of the Christ. He got in trouble for some controversial remarks and his star power dwindled save for his involvement on a project from 2011 called The Beaver. However, with his attachment in new projects, some see the potential for him re-emerging as a major action star.

Mel Gibson had other projects that he made throughout the years such as the Mad Max films, and he also starred in a juicy role as William Shakespeare’s Hamlet back in his prime. Perhaps, one of his best directorial efforts is The Man Without a Face from 1993. He both starred in and directed the project.

Many people are wondering if Danny Glover or Joe Pesci could return in the new Lethal Weapon film but there are no answers as to who the film will feature in the cast at the present time other than, perhaps, Gibson himself. One hopes if Gibson directs the 5th film in the series that he would do Richard Donner justice. All eyes are on Gibson for this one.
