Roger Corman is going to be bringing to the screen a new version of his famed hit from 1960, The Little Shop of Horrors.

Roger Corman is teaming up with director Joe Dante and producer Brad Krevoy to reboot Corman’s 1960’s cult classic, The Little Shop of Horrors. That film catapulted Jack Nicholson to stardom and inspired a 1986 musical version of the same name which was a minor box-office hit at the time it was released, earning about $39 million in ticket sales. This new reboot will be titled Little Shop of Halloween Horrors.

Director Dante is most known for his hit movie from 1984, Gremlins. Corman and Krevoy will be producing the upcoming reboot which seems like it has been a long time in the making, coming almost 40 years after the musical film adaptation. The 1986 Little Shop of Horrors was directed by Frank Oz and had an all-star cast which featured Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, John Candy and Jim Belushi, to name just a few of that film’s cast members.

What kind of movie, exactly. will the reboot, Little Shop of Halloween Horrors, be? A straight horror film, a horror/comedy or a musical? The premise of the original movies surrounded a flower shop where a nerdy worker named Seymour (Moranis in the 1986 picture) must feed a plant human blood to keep it alive. The plant’s name in the 1986 version was Audrey II as Seymour’s girlfriend in the movie was named Audrey. There was also a Broadway musical based on the material and the musical still sometimes plays at live theaters across the country.

Corman made the original low-budget 1960 version in about three days’ total time. That was an accomplishment back then for the director who eventually went on to produce many “B” movies throughout the 1980’s such as 1987’s little seen at the time, Munchies.

The funniest character in the 1986 movie, Little Shop of Horrors, was a dentist played by Steve Martin who gets fed to Audrey II during the course of the movie. Hopefully, the upcoming project will have a dentist in it as well to keep fans of the original movies satisfied. “Feed me, Seymour,” the killer plant says (and demands) in the 1986 movie. That turned out to be one of the most memorable film lines of 1986.

Little Shop of Halloween Horrors will introduce the dark, yet strangely comic, material to a new generation of audiences. Whether all this will translate to a film worthy of the big screen or the small screen remains to be seen at the present time. Dante’s past films have mostly played on the silver screen but he hasn’t made a big picture in some time. It’s welcome to see the return of veterans Corman and Dante and fans of the original have already started anticipating what may be in store for them with Little Shop of Halloween Horrors.
