The Board Game Monopoly is Coming to the Screen

Margot Robbie has returned to the toy world for Monopoly, another project which she will be producing; this one is for Lionsgate.

It has been revealed at CinemaCon that Margot Robbie of Barbie fame will be producing a film version of the wildly popular Hasbro board game, Monopoly. This project has been in development for 16 years and has bounced from studio to studio but now it seems that there is a firm plan to finally make the film, especially considering the box-office success of last summer’s Barbie.

It was inevitable that a studio would strike while the iron is hot and produce a film version of Monopoly. Universal Pictures originally had the project under its belt. Kevin Hart was once attached to the Monopoly movie but the truth is the casting really hasn’t been decided yet for the forthcoming film from Lionsgate. Over at Mattel, there is a slew of projects in development such as a Hot Wheels picture and an American Girl film. When will it be overkill, you ask? Not anytime soon because who wouldn’t want to see a movie based on the long-existing board game, Monopoly, which has challenged generations for years?

The big question mark hanging over the film version of Monopoly is whether or not Robbie will play a role in the movie, herself. That is a question for which we don’t have an answer for quite yet. However, inquiring minds also want to know who will be playing Milburn Pennybags, the older gentleman with the hat and mustache from the board game? There are several theories that could be circulating in that particular regard. One may be Kevin Hart if they go down a lighter-themed road. But, who wouldn’t want to see Ewan McGregor or, better yet, an older actor such as Kenneth Branagh play that part?

Audiences will definitely not collect $200 going to see Monopoly but will most likely greatly enjoy a picture based on the popular board games. Lionsgate will probably get out of jail free for other less profitable projects thanks to sizable box-office returns for a Monopoly movie. Audiences will find a place to park even if it’s not on Park Place to go see this project and will be happy to embrace Robbie and the Lionsgate company’s vision of what the movie will actually be like.

While we wait for this movie to go into production, the casting will be everything here. Who wants to see a Monopoly movie without a good cast? Nobody and there are some really big names who will most likely be in contention for the coveted role of Milburn Pennybags should the film choose to roll the dice and make his role in the movie a big one.
