Matt Shakman Set to Direct Upcoming Star Trek Film

“WandaVision” director Matt Shakman has been selected to direct the next new movie in the Star Trek series.

Fresh off an Emmy nomination for directing Disney Plus’ hit Marvel show, “WandaVision,” Matt Shakman has just earned the job of directing the latest installment in the Star Trek film franchise.

Shakman has developed quite a body of work on television directing shows such as “Six Feet Under,” “Succession,” and “Game of Thrones” but only has one movie feature film to his credit. That barely released picture from 2014, Cut Bank, was not a smashing success with critics but starred high profile actors such as Liam Hemsworth, Billy Bob Thornton and John Malkovich. Yet, Shakman’s work on the amazing Elizabeth Olsen show, “WandaVision,” was so good, though, that Shakman seems like a natural choice for the upcoming Star Trek project. Let’s not mention the other 22 nominations the Disney Plus Olsen-starring series earned besides the nod for Shakman.

The previous Star Trek picture was unleashed five years ago back in 2016. It was called Star Trek Beyond. It had an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes but earned just $158 million domestically. Nevertheless, fans of the series were happy and awarded that picture an “A-” CinemaScore grade hopefully proving there’s still a lot of life left in the franchise.

Paramount Pictures will be releasing the upcoming film to be directed by Shakman. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot will again be producing. No cast has been selected for the project yet, however.

In 2018, S.J. Clarkson was going to make a Star Trek movie but its potential stars, Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth, found themselves detached from the project for not “coming to terms” with Paramount. Of course, Quentin Tarantino’s much talked about foray into directing a Star Trek film is most likely going to be a “no go” as well with the director recently discussing retirement. Just last March, however, Paramount hired Kalinda Vasquez to write a Star Trek feature which is totally different from the one Shakman is set to direct.

With J.J. Abrams at the center of Shakman’s upcoming Star Trek picture, it seems like there could be new life breathed into the franchise and, hopefully, the latest installment can at least top $200 million at the domestic box-office when it is released. No release date has been set yet. In any event, Matt Shakman is one of the most valuable directors in show biz right now and all eyes are on him to see how he does with the upcoming Star Trek film.
