Michael J. Fox Has Idea for Reboot of Back to the Future

Michael J. Fox recently came up with the possibility of a twist if a Back to the Future reboot was ever to be made.

In a recent “Entertainment Tonight” interview, Michael J. Fox suggested that if a reboot of Back to the Future was ever to see the light of day, there could be a unique way to do it. His idea is to actually make Marty McFly a girl. Although nothing is happening now, Fox believes that a remake is going to happen one day. His suggestion would be a nice way to breathe new life into the franchise which petered out with Back to the Future Part III in the very early 1990’s.

One problem, though: This type of gender swap was done with another popular 1980’s franchise: Ghostbusters, which came out about six years ago. The results of that switch of characters’ genders didn’t fare too well at the box-office yet with Back to the Future, Fox’s idea could be something that could actually make money depending on who was cast in the principal role. And, it would also depend on how good the final picture was.

The writer of the original 1985 film, Back to the Future, Bob Gale doesn’t think any remake or reboot could live up to the 1985 picture and its sequels. Gale believes Michael J. Fox was the key to the original picture’s success. Could something be made without Fox? Gale doesn’t think so.

However, another interesting tidbit was recently revealed. Michael J. Fox stated that he has finally realized, after the passage of many years, how well-loved the original pictures truly are. It may have been obvious to others with the first film’s $212 million domestic box-office gross (which was phenomenal at the time) but the franchise’s success is finally sinking in with Fox.

Back to the Future was about a young skateboarder named Marty McFly (Fox) who travels back to the 1950’s through a time machine invented by his good buddy, Doc (Christopher Lloyd). While McFly accomplished a lot in the first movie, two more sequels were made that highlighted more of McFly’s adventures. However, the series slightly ran out of steam at the box office when Back to the Future Part III grossed a merely adequate $88 million domestically. Thus, the first film was most likely the best of the series and many fans would probably agree on that.

Whether or not a Back to the Future reboot actually gets made, it is definitely interesting to consider Fox’s proposal to make Marty McFly a girl. Who would be cast in the role if that did happen? That’s a question that I’ve pondered. Perhaps, when she’s a little older, the charismatic Julia Butters? Butters is soon to appear in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans. She’s just a young teenager now but by the time the project gets together (if it gets together), she may be just the right age for the part. Who would you cast as a female Marty McFly?
