MY OLD ASS (2024): High-Concept Aubrey Plaza Comedy Nabs $15 Million Deal with Amazon MGM

Megan Park’s Sundance Fave Gets Picked Up for $15 Million

The new Aubrey Plaza comedy, My Old Ass, has not only proven to be a crowd-pleaser at Sundance, it has also garnered a $15 million deal with Amazon MGM.

Aubrey Plaza and newcomer Maisy Stella star in the interestingly titled, My Old Ass, a funny new picture which very recently played at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to enthusiastic responses. There’s nothing funny about the sweet $15 million deal the film has gotten with Amazon MGM which plans to release the film in theaters.

After just finding out Jake Gyllenhaal’s remake, Road House, won’t be playing in theaters, the fact that an Aubrey Plaza comedy will, most likely, be on the big screen in a wide release certainly piqued people’s curiosity regarding the quality of My Old Ass. One conclusion has been reached based on the recent acquisition deal: This new movie must be really good!

Megan Park, director of 2021’s The Fallout, the acclaimed Jenna Ortega drama, has directed My Old Ass. Critics have praised Park’s new movie with some of the most outstanding reviews at Sundance for a comedy and it’s also no surprise that huge star Margot Robbie (Barbie) of the production company LuckyChap is one of the backers of the movie. My Old Ass yielded bids from several potential buyers before landing at Amazon MGM.

With the recent memory of the successful $20 million grossing streaming hit, Saltburn (also from LuckyChap), dancing in their heads, Amazon MGM head honchos are foreseeing another big hit for their company. In My Old Ass, Maisy Stella portrays Elliott, a young college-bound girl who runs into her older self (Plaza) who warns her not to fall in love with a certain male somebody. When Elliott runs into the guy she’s been warned about, hilarity ensues with surprising and touching results all around. Expect laughs and emotions to ensue in crowd-pleasing ways.

Sundance deals that are this big can sometimes lead to unrealistic lofty expectations regarding an acquired film’s box-office performance. However, with the back up plan called streaming, My Old Ass is certain to find an audience even if its box-office grosses may not end up as high as anticipated. There’s still the hope, though, that My Old Ass could be a huge box-office hit along the lines of There’s Something About Mary given its clever premise. In reality, it would probably be more likely to match the $48 million that Anna Faris’s The House Bunny made. Plaza comedies typically feel similar to Anna Faris comic vehicles though with a bit more intelligence and depth. Due to the originality of the premise of My Old Ass, it’s hard to pigeonhole it into a traditional convention of movies at this time.

That $15 million acquisition price suggests that hopes are pretty high for at least $60 million in grosses at the domestic box-office. It may not be a Barbie level success, but My Old Ass could find itself having a rather successful theatrical run upon its release before becoming a streaming sensation.
