Oscar-Winning Movie LA LA LAND Will Be Getting the Broadway Musical Treatment

La La Land Set to Become a Broadway Musical

The 2016 hit movie starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, La La Land, is officially slated to become a Broadway musical.

Consider New York City the new “City of Stars” as the hit song of the same name could soon be performed on Broadway in a musical based on the smash hit movie, La La Land. Some of the “fools who dream” in the world still see the 2016 movie as a “realistic” romance despite its playful dream-like state which takes precedence in the film. In the movie, Gosling’s jazz lover/performer and Stone’s actress character do not end up together at the film’s ending. The conclusion could change in the Broadway musical which still has no principal cast members attached to it as of yet. Still, don’t hold your breath for a happily-ever-after ending quite yet.

Set to direct the musical that will play on the stage on Broadway is Bartlett Sher. Justin Hurwitz’s music just lends itself to the story line that was featured in the picture which was both heartbreaking and upbeat depending on which scene you single out. Song lyrics from the memorable ballads in the film were by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul who will also be doing the Broadway music as well.

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling both received Academy Award nominations (while Stone actually won) for their lead performances in the movie La La Land though it is unlikely either of those two film stars will reprise their performance on Broadway.

La La Land won several Oscars but did not win for Best Picture. An official CinemaScore grade wasn’t revealed for the original movie. La La Land opened in a platform release which is something that should have been done with that movie’s director, Damien Chazelle’s latest film, Babylon. La La Land may have been hated by some viewers (who saw it in its initial release) because of the film’s unconventional ending but because the movie opened with a platform release, it ended up gaining momentum through awards nominations, ultimately becoming a smash hit film grossing over $150 million domestically. There was no denying, however, that the film’s opening scene with singing and dancing on a Los Angeles highway was, in a word, brilliant.

As a Broadway musical, La La Land is the type of production that is perfect for a date night. The initial story line from the movie made viewers compare and contrast the desire for success in one’s career to the need for genuine love. The ending of the movie definitely opened up conversations afterwards and the musical is likely to follow suit.

While La La Land in concert has been making its way around the world, there’s nothing like going to the Big Apple to see a Broadway musical of the caliber that the upcoming production promises to be.
