Brendan Fraser’s Lost Movie Reflected On

Brendan Fraser has looked back at the Batgirl movie which Warner Bros. and DC pulled the plug on several years ago.

Brendan Fraser is currently enjoying some of the best reviews of his career with the dramatic film, Rental Family, which earned a solid “A” CinemaScore grade and has audiences in awe of Fraser’s terrific performance in the picture. Fraser recently took a glimpse back at the movie he was supposed to be in that would give him an “in” with comic book fans. It was filmed but never released. That movie was Batgirl, a project which featured Leslie Grace (In the Heights) as the title character and also starred Fraser as the film’s central villain, a pyromaniac known as “Firefly.”

Fraser fairly recently won the Oscar for Best Actor for his work in The Whale and also appeared in director Marty Scorsese’s Oscar-caliber Killers of the Flower Moon, but Batgirl promised to launch Fraser into the world of big-budget superhero movies. It appeared that the movie only had the intention to be a film event on HBO Max even though it seemed like a possible box-office hit, given its potential appeal as a franchise. Batgirl was scrapped in its entirety and never released either theatrically or on the streaming service.

In a recent interview, Fraser believes that young girls may have found some appeal in the main character of Batgirl and that the film could have potentially been one of some relevance despite its failure to secure a release from its studio. It seems the movie’s failure to be released and/or totally completed was covered for the studio by insurance, but Fraser seems to believe it could have deserved “a shot in the marketplace.” Fraser was enthusiastic that Michael Keaton had also been in the film as Batman. However, the studio made up its mind and Fraser is now on to other things.

Rental Family seems poised to secure a nice box-office gross on a smaller scale. Its critical success is a key ingredient to Fraser securing more good work and the actor has come a long way from the stretch where he failed to appear in quality movies.

Fraser came on to the scene with School Ties and Encino Man back in the early 1990’s and had box-office success with George of the Jungle and The Mummy. He also appeared in the Best Picture Oscar winner, Crash. Though playing a villain in Batgirl was an interesting role, we’ll never see how the film was and how Fraser was in it. In other news, there should be a return to The Mummy franchise for Fraser in the not-so-distant future, so all is not lost.
