Ridley Scott Unveils Gladiator Sequel in the Works

Acclaimed filmmaker Ridley Scott has given us an update on the Gladiator sequel revealing that one is about to be written.

When Russell Crowe starred in the 2000 Academy Award winner Gladiator, he won the Best Actor Oscar besting even Tom Hanks who was up that year for Cast Away. Joaquin Phoenix earned a nod for his terrific supporting role in the Crowe film. The picture grossed $187 domestically and earned a coveted “A” CinemaScore grade. Now, It is only appropriate that a sequel is on the horizon even if we had to wait 20 plus years for one that was worth making. Ridley Scott will begin concentrating on the sequel once he completes the upcoming Napoleon film titled Kitbag.

Scott has pushed the Gladiator sequel project to the top of his “to-do list,” according to sources. Scott is 83-years old now and is a legendary director bringing some of the most successful films ever made to the silver screen, including the original Alien and the critically acclaimed sensation Thelma & Louise. Scott is one of the most consistently successful filmmakers working in Hollywood today with very few flops under his belt. This Gladiator sequel was originally made known to the public in late 2018 and will showcase the story of Lucius, who is the son of Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen in the first film) and the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix from the original).

This sequel will be set 25 years after the original picture ended. Paramount Pictures is set to be backing the movie and Peter Craig of The Batman fame will be penning the script. Ridley Scott recently reunited with the talented Phoenix from the original Gladiator on Kitbag and also Jodie Comer who he recently worked with on the upcoming Matt Damon/Ben Affleck picture titled The Last Duel. Scott also has a movie called House of Gucci which features Jared Leto and Al Pacino and is coming out in November.

Gladiator was a moving epic film set in Roman times. It was a stirring historical drama that won over moviegoers and critics alike. It is noteworthy for featuring Oliver Reed in his final role. In the movie, Russell Crowe’s Maximus is betrayed and fights for justice and honor. It was a truly moving adventure movie that has since won even more fans than when it was initially released through its appearance on cable and streaming. I wish I could say Russell Crowe was coming back but if you’ve seen the film, you know why he won’t be returning. All eyes will be on updates regarding the film’s sequel’s progress on its way to the silver screen.
