Pablo Larraín directs Kristen Stewart as Lady Diana in Steven Knight‘s original screenplay in Spencer.

This chamber drama speculates on the turmoil of family members concerning the marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles during the traditional royal family’s Christmas celebration in 1995 at the Queen’s residence in Norfolk: Sandringham House.

The history of Sandringham House has a prominent place in Spencer for several reasons. First, it is the birthplace of Lady Diana Frances Spencer, as then she was. Second, its architectural style, according to the experts, was drawn directly from nearby Blickling Hall, the ancestral home of the Boleyn family.

And third, this may explain screenwriter Steven Knight’s intriguing decision to write Ann Boleyn into the story (presumably as her infamous wandering spirit), portrayed here by Amy Manson.

Judging from what the cast and crew bring to the table, this biopic seems promising in terms of social politics. For example, Larraín’s experience directing the acclaimed Jackie, and especially, No, which explores the impact of the Pinochet dictatorship under which the director lived as a youth in his native Chile, stands to lend his personal touch as well.

In his own right, Steven Knight has a reputation for incisive sociopolitical thrillers in film, chief among them Dirty Pretty Things. He wrote Spencer directly for the screen, presumably basing the plot on the first official public announcement, right before the Christmas holiday, of the troubled union of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The cast also brings its share of work in films based on true political events: Kristen Stewart played another title role in Seberg; Timothy Spall portrayed the famous innovative painter in Mr. Turner; and Jack Farthing as Andy Dumphries in Official Secrets.
