STAR WARS: THE LOST ROMANCE: An Editorial on Finn & Rey’s Missing Love Story in Disney’s STAR WAR Trilogy

Many storylines were begun in Star Wars: The Force Awakens that were not carried over or continued in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. A possible romantic relationship between Finn and Rey is one of those plotlines. With the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premiering in a few weeks (and the inexplicable insertion of The Emperor into its storyline), there is little hope that what was hinted at in The Force Awakens between Finn and Rey will be brought to any type of worthwhile and gratifying maturation, let alone a meaningful conclusion, in The Rise of Skywalker.

The groundwork time for a meaningful, more-than-friends relationship was in The Last Jedi (the film in which Rey also should have received her Jedi training so that it was not crammed into The Rise of Skywalker, but I digress). That narrative opportunity has come and gone.

With that being said, I wanted to take a moment to look at what was in The Force Awakens and what could have been in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker if a substantive love storyline had been written, consistently told, and organically brought to fruition between Finn and Rey (and what that could have done for Disney’s Star Wars trilogy).
