Although it was the stuff of pipe dreams only a couple years ago, Disney‘s acquisition of the two cinematic universes has inspired hopes that the company would eventually produce a film featuring both. Such speculation remains just that, but recent remarks made by Stan Lee show that it’s no longer just fans who are considering the possibility.

Talking with Big Issue, the Spider-man and X-Men creator appeared surprisingly optimistic about the possibility of such a crossover. Comic Book Resources reports:

“Yeah, probably,” he said. “It’ll be the most expensive film ever produced! But anything that the public want to see you can be sure it will eventually be produced.”

When specifically asked about a Star Wars/Marvel crossover, Lee replied: “Well, I don’t know how many characters you can have in a movie but obviously the people who produce these things are looking to be as successful as possible,” said Lee. “If they feel that incorporating Star Wars with the Marvel characters will be very successful, they’ll find a way to do it. Can you imagine Spider-Man saying: ‘May the force be with you’? It may come to that!

Elaborating on the likelihood of such a project, Lee points out that The Avengers originated under similar conditions.

“We did it in the comics. I created the Avengers by taking many of our characters and making a team out of them,” said Lee. “We can have as many characters join the Avengers as we want to for future movies. That might be fun too – all of a sudden Luke Skywalker is an Avenger!”

While a Marvel/Star Wars crossover remains far off, the fact that someone as noteworthy as Stan Lee is thinking about it suggests that the higher-ups at Disney are mulling over the idea.

**** We hired Reggie, fulfilled our obligations to him, and he quit in the middle of covering two TV series w/ no notice and no explanation. He then ignored our emails asking him to complete his coverage (we had no one else to cover those TV shows). He didn't care. We regret hiring him and we regret putting our trust in him. **** An aspiring writer, longtime film junkie, and former UCLARadio.com disc jockey (where I graduated with a BA in Political Science), I've made the jump from penning book reviews and current events editorials for HonorSociety.org to writing movie and TV news and reviews. When I'm not working towards my certificate in Radio and Television/Video Production at Fullerton College, I enjoy reading (horror, science fiction, and historical/political nonfiction are particular favorites), participating in my school's TV and theatre clubs, attending movie screenings, plays, concerts, and other events, and trying to come up with pithy things to say on social media. Believe it or not, there are occasions where I find time to write for my own leisure.
