Kristen Stewart’s Feature Film Debut Impresses at Cannes
Kristen Stewart has a potential awards contender with the director’s The Chronology of Water which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
Kristen Stewart’s passion project, The Chronology of Water, earned a four-minute-plus standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival at its conclusion. There were also some serious tears in the audience’s eyes as well suggesting that the film is an emotional powerhouse of a motion picture. Deadline reports that the ovation lasted six minutes and a half overall, including the time people sat back down in their chairs. This marks good news for the project which has been in the works for years. It thus shouldn’t be too long before a distributor picks the Oscar-bait film up.
Imogen Poots is featured in Stewart’s The Chronology of Water as a woman with Olympic swimming ambitions named Lidia Yuknavitch. Escaping a dire existence thanks to a scholarship, Lidia fell in with drugs and overcame tremendous obstacles in her life which were documented in a memoir with the same title. Also a story of sexual abuse, Lidia’s dad was guilty of being forceful and acting inappropriate against Lidia. In swimming, Lidia found freedom and salvation. It’s the stuff great movie dramas are made of and could yield Poots and Stewart Oscar nods.
There’s also the fact that Jim Belushi is in the movie in one of his most serious and powerful roles to date as Ken Kesey, the now-deceased author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Belushi previously worked in dramatic movies with his stand-out performance from Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel a truly significant example of his fine acting abilities.
Stewart is seemingly beyond grateful for the audience’s overwhelmingly positive reaction to the film. This movie was initially announced about 7 years ago and faced an uphill battle to find financing. It is noteworthy to mention that American Beauty‘s Thora Birch is also featured in the hard-working cast as well in a rare and substantial motion picture appearance for the performer.
Kristen Stewart has enjoyed much success as an actress over the years and received an Oscar nod for her outstanding leading work in the historical drama, Spencer. Other noteworthy films she has appeared in include the Twilight movies, Love Lies Bleeding and one of her first major roles was her one in Panic Room, the David Fincher thriller that starred Jodie Foster.
While The Chronology of Water is certainly heavy in terms of its thematic elements, it is going to be one film that a major or indie studio will want to pick up quickly. Searchlight, A24, Sony Pictures Classics or Focus Features all feel like potential studios that could wish to distribute this uniquely fascinating, moving drama which should earn some love from the major critics groups and award circuits when it is ultimately screened wider and released to the public.
