THE CURVE (2020): Adam Benzine Reveals New COVID-19 Documentary Filmed in Secret

Adam Benzine

Adam Benzine, director of the Oscar-nominated documentary Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah, just revealed his newest project, The Curve: a hard hitting investigative thriller examining the decisions made in the highest levels of U.S. government during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With Benzine now presenting The Curve to buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival, the documentary features original interviews with experts including former CDC director Dr. Ali Khan, infectious disease epidemiologist Dr. Emily Landon, investigative journalist Sonya Shah, former State department advisor Ilan Goldberg, director of the Global Biorisk Advisory Council Dr. Gavin Macgregor-Skinner, and science writer at The Atlantic, Ed Yong. Benzine combines these interviews with “creatively treated archival testimony” to create what he hopes will be “what ‘Inside Job‘ was for the housing market collapse. With the U.S. death toll nearing 200,000, Americans are understandably furious. They are demanding to know how this could have happened. And using meticulous research, in-depth context, creatively treated archival and expert first-person testimony, we reveal just that.”

The film will feature a soundtrack by Joel Goodman of Saving Pelican 895 and is now being edited in post-production by Tiffany Beaudin, winner of the Canadian Cinema Editors award for Claude Lanzmann. Melissa Hood of The Reckoning and Diana Warme of The Skyjacker’s Tale serve as associate and line producers respectively.

As one would imagine, viewers will not be able to catch this film in theaters anytime soon, because of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Benzine added “while circumstances mean this movie will likely launch first on the small screen, it’s our intention to have this work of cinema — which has been created and scored with the big screen in mind — in theaters globally as soon as is safe and feasible.” The full feature will be available for broadcast in the U.S. in October with all rights and territories currently available, though it is unknown which network or streaming service will be picking it up.

As someone who enjoys documentaries and could use a little more info on the origins of this pandemic, I’ll be glad to get a fresh perspective on current events and am looking forward to watching The Curve next month as well as Netflix’s Totally Under Control documentary that focuses on the White House’s response, released following Bob Woodward’s revelation that President Trump admitted that he knowingly downplayed the severity of the crisis. Both documentaries will be coming out in October. I’d recommend you take a couple of hours out of your busy schedule, crack open a beer, and enjoy this safe, socially distanced viewing experience from the comfort of home so you can learn more about our current situation and stay politically informed.
