THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (2012): Lazarus Pit, India Set Photos

The Dark Knight Rises Set Photos from Jodhpur, India, possibly showing The Lazarus Pit, have premiered. The Dark Knight Rises (2012) set photos show Christopher Nolan‘s Batman crew members in various locales in India. The two key pictures are of a green screen pit, many musing that it is the first look at The Lazarus Pit.

The Lazarus Pit is [a] mythical vat of arcane chemicals in the DC comics universe. The most common user of the pit is Ra’s al Ghul. Ra’s al Ghul accidentally discovered the first Lazarus Pit as a cure for the dying son of a sultan he worked for. The Pit had a terrible side effect, however; it turned the Prince temporarily insane, leading to him killing the doctor’s wife. After being blamed for the murder, the man who would become Ra’s Al Ghul was buried in the desert. He was rescued by a tribe and a boy named Huew. After this he used the Lazarus Pit to save himself, and vowed to avenge his wife. The doctor gave himself the title Ra’s al Ghul – The Demon’s Head.

The taker of the photos, @gautamvalluri, says that the photos of a possible Lazarus Pit are actually a “Close up of the green screen…the green screen set up over the well that I was talking about.” This doesn’t mean that these are not Lazarus Pit pictures but would the Lazarus Pit in Christopher Nolan’s Batman universe really be out in the open like that for anybody to stumble upon? Doesn’t make much sense.

In case anyone has forgotten about the current characters appearing in The Dark Knight Rises, played by Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Sunjata, Burn Gorman, Diego Klattenhoff, Juno Temple, and Josh Pence, and what part Ra’s al Ghul and The Lazarus Pit could play:

Marion Cotillard has been cast [written about here: The Dark Knight Rises: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard Roles Revealed] as a character called Miranda Tate, but rumors keep circling that she may in fact be Talia al Ghul the daughter of Ra’s.

Josh Pence has also been cast [written about here: The Dark Knight Rises: Josh Pence joins 2012 Batman Cast] as a young Ra’s al Ghul for some flashback scenes.

Liam Neeson has said he will not be returning as Ra’s al Ghul for The Dark Knight Rises.

Maybe, if it is a Lazarus Pit, this will be used for one of the flashback scenes. Christian Bale is over in India for the shoot so Bruce Wayne could be over there investigating the past of Ra’s al Ghul.

If it is a working Lazarus Pit then that could mean Christopher Nolan is heading away from his real world view on Batman.
