Denzel Washington is Ready to Make New Action Sequel

The Equalizer 3 has been given a green light and, like the first two films in the series, it will star Denzel Washington in the leading role.

It seems that every four years, a new Equalizer movie is due to arrive and depending on how fast the movie can get made, 2022 may see the return of Denzel Washington in the third installment of the action franchise. In 2014, Washington starred in the first Equalizer film and the movie made quite a bit of cash at the box-office. The Equalizer earned $101 million at the domestic box-office while the 2018 sequel, The Equalizer 2, made $102 million domestically. You may want to venture that the third film in the series could make $103 million if you go by the numbers presented for the first two pictures.

Besides topping $100 million at the box-office, these Equalizer films are also significant crowd pleasers. While the first film received an “A-” CinemaScore grade from audiences polled, the second movie earned a solid “A.” Anyone want to project an “A+” for the third film judging from these past scores?

You may wonder why Denzel Washington is sticking to this franchise besides the fact that audiences love these movies. The first movie only has a 60% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes while the sequel is at 52%. That’s not your typical Washington level numbers but the answer as to why Washington makes these movies may be simple. They have both been made by action filmmaker Antoine Fuqua who directed the acclaimed performer to his Best Actor Academy Award in the film Training Day from 2001. While Fuqua is not officially signed on for the third film, he is in talks to direct it, according to sources, and it would make sense for these two talents to re-team for another picture that should be a big box-office hit.

Today was a big day for Denzel Washington. He just scored a SAG nomination for his work in The Tragedy of Macbeth which means it’s safe to assume that an Oscar nod could follow. Joel Coen’s William Shakespeare adaptation which features Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth has earned Washington raves throughout the awards and nominations season.

Washington is physically preparing for his demanding role in the new Equalizer movie. Shakespeare may give one’s brain a workout while memorizing the Bard’s complex passages of dialogue, but the action pictures give Denzel a physical challenge which the actor is more than up to the task of taking on.

The Equalizer films were originally based on a TV series from the 1980’s. No release date has been set for The Equalizer 3, but you can see Denzel’s brilliant performance in The Tragedy of Macbeth in the meantime.
