A fourth film in The Matrix franchise has been greenlit. The film will star Keanu Reeves, reprising the role of Neo, and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising the role of Trinity. The fourth Matrix film will be directed by Lana Wachowski. Wachowski, Aleksander Hemon, and David Mitchell wrote the screenplay for The Matrix 4.

Lana Wachowski has this to say about visiting The Matrix twenty years later:

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

No details for the new film have been released but the third film saw the end of the human / machine war, peace instituted, and a promise given that all battery-humans would be freed from bondage.

Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich this to say about the new film project:

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering the Matrix with Lana. Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”
