THE SENATOR’S WIFE: Meryl Streep cast in NRA, Weinstein Produced Film

Meryl Streep The Devil Wears Prada

Meryl Streep cast in The Senator’s Wife. The NRA (the National Rifle Association) will take center stage in a new film called The Senator’s Wife.

Who will be the other star of the film? Why the subject, of course. Chairman of The Weinstein Co., Harvey Weinstein described the upcoming film as “the new Mr. Smith Goes To Washington,” referring to Frank Capra’s beloved political film which starred the ever charming Jimmy Stewart as Jefferson Smith.

The 1939 film follows the naïve Mr. Smith, appointed to fill a vacancy in the US Senate who instigates a one man crusade to fight corrupt politics in Washington. Similar to the classic film, this new film will explore a dramatized battle against corrupt political offenders and targeting the NRA. The film will tackle a sensitive subject to many American’s, heightened by many recent high profile mass shootings.

Weinstein stated, “they’re (the NRA) going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them.”

Weinstein, a known voice again the National Rifle Association and strong supporter of President Barrack Obama, will explore in this film the “intimidation”, “lies” and behind the scene conspiracies within the organization.  The film will also look at the defeated legislation that would have expanded background checks on gun buyers. Weinstein isn’t the only one up in arms (ha!) about the organization. President Obama has also been rather vocal about his disdain for the group’s practices. In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre; parent’s called for a change in gun policies in hopes to prevent history from repeating.

At a conference held in the Rose Garden, Obama called out the NRA, saying the organization, led by Wayne LaPierre, “willfully lied” to the American people. “They claimed that it would create some sort of big brother gun registry even though the bill did the opposite,” Obama said of the NRA. He also added, “This pattern of spreading untruths about this legislation served a purpose. Because those lies upset an intense minority of gun owners and that in turn intimidated a lot of senators.”

Shortly after the Aurora and Newtown massacres, the NRA made a somewhat tactless move by beginning a robo-calls campaign directed to the parents, family and associates of the victims of these assaults asking for funding and their support against gun legislation. These insensitive tactics prompted Connecticut Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy (and others, of course) to blast the NRA.

The Senator’s Wife will be a behind-the-scenes account of how the NRA used its influence with politicians to defeat the bill. News on the film is still very new, so we aren’t exactly sure what Meryl Streep’s role will be in the film, but if we’d have to make a guess about the commanding screen legend, we’d say she’ll be playing the titular Senator’s wife.
