USEFUL IDIOTS: Meryl Streep Set to Return to the Screen in a Film by Director Joseph Cedar

Meryl Streep Set to Topline New York-Set Film
Meryl Streep is slated to be starring alongside Sigourney Weaver in a new thriller from director Joseph Cedar called Useful Idiots.
Black Bear has just released the new dramatic boxing film, Christy, which features an Oscar-nomination-worthy turn by Sydney Sweeney. As far as the studio’s other upcoming projects are concerned, the film Useful Idiots looks like it could have some serious prestige attached to it thanks to the presence of Oscar winner Meryl Streep in the lead role and three-time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver who is also in the main cast.
Useful Idiots will be set in New York and features the premise of Streep’s longtime journalist, Diane Castle, uncovering an incredibly huge real estate sale that prompts her to take on the story of a lifetime while searching for the owner of the property’s identity. Events lead Diane to an oligarch who displays to Diane some serious corruption of the highest order. While the title of the upcoming film may be kept, it seems like it could also change given the seriousness of the film in juxtaposition to the way the movie’s title sounds. It feels like the title of a comedy more than a tension-filled New York-set thriller.
Streep has been seen in many Oscar-nominated roles. From Kramer vs. Kramer to The Bridges of Madison County to The Iron Lady, her name on a film is typically a stamp of tremendous quality. She also has had fun on-screen in movies like Mamma Mia! and its sequel and the bit part she played in the Farrelly Brothers’ 2003 gem, Stuck on You. Streep was seen playing the President of the United States in the 2021 masterfully made comic film, Don’t Look Up, where she played with Leonardo DiCaprio.
When you consider the career of Weaver, you uncover that some of her greatest work was in the roles she didn’t get nominated for an Oscar for (see: The Ice Storm or Death and the Maiden). She was nominated twice in the same year for the Academy Award for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for her parts in Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl. She’s also appeared in blockbusters like Aliens, Ghostbusters and Avatar.
Useful Idiots is the type of movie that will stir up conversations about wealth and corruption in America today. Anora, last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner, zeroed in on an oligarch, too, and Joseph Cedar’s sure-to-be controversial new film most likely hopes to be recognized with accolades such as the ones Anora received, especially considering its two leading ladies thus far. Look for more news on this dramatic project as it develops and to see if the film will add some high-profile players to its supporting cast.
