Florence Pugh’s Newest Film Begins Production

Florence Pugh has started work on the Netflix film, The Wonder, which is now filming in Ireland.

You loved her in Midsommar, Little Women and Black Widow. Now, Oscar-nominated actress Florence Pugh is back at work with her latest film, The Wonder. This latest film of Pugh’s is being directed by Sebastian Lelio and is a thriller based on the book by acclaimed writer Emma Donoghue. Set in the Irish midlands in 1862, it explores the story of a young girl who stops eating but, shockingly, doesn’t die. Pugh will play the role of an English nurse who comes to try to understand this very unusual scenario. Donoghue also co-wrote the screenplay.

The Wonder is the first U.K. features project that Netflix is taking on. U.K. features will develop event movies for the streamer that will give a platform for new and distinguished U.K. artists.

Florence Pugh came on to the scene big time when she appeared in the 2017 drama Lady Macbeth. After playing the role of Katherine in that acclaimed film, Pugh has had a nonstop series of roles in high profile projects. One of her upcoming projects is Olivia Wilde’s second film as director (following Booksmart). That film is titled Don’t Worry Darling.

When Pugh played the lead role in the 2019 horror film, Midsommar, she won fans of all types who loved her performance in the very distinct, terrifying movie directed by Ari Aster. Now, with the recent release of another (even bigger) hit, Black Widow, Pugh seems poised for her second Oscar nomination, following her first one for her role in 2019’s Little Women.

Sebastian Lelio is thrilled to be working with Pugh on The Wonder, according to sources. The author of the book the film is based on, Emma Donoghue, also penned Room which went on to be nominated for several Academy Awards. The Wonder could follow in that acclaimed film’s footsteps. Donoghue is also an executive producer of The Wonder.

Florence Pugh is quite a versatile actress who has played roles with terror, intensity, romance, action and humor. All those qualities are what make her so appealing to filmmakers who are eager to work with her. If her absolutely stellar performance in Black Widow is any indication, she’ll have a lot more exciting roles coming her way in the not-so-distant future. She’s currently going to be reprising her role as Yelena Belova from Black Widow in Disney+’s Hawkeye which is due in November.
