New Toy Story Movie in the Works

Chief Executive Officer of the Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger, has confirmed that a fifth Toy Story movie is in development.

Woody and Buzz Lightyear could and should be back on movie screens together in the upcoming Toy Story 5. After sailing on his own in the box-office origin story misfire, Lightyear, Buzz could return with Woody for a new Toy Story picture. Bob Iger has announced that not only is there another Toy Story in the works but also a new Frozen and another Zootopia picture as well.

Disney’s franchises are certainly a force to contend with. New ideas like Lightyear and Strange World were turned into movies which fizzled at the box-office so it’s no surprise that the “House of Mouse” is turning to tried and true heavy hitters for future projects. Toy Story 5 is the most surprising as the last installment in the series kind of felt like it was time to say goodbye to our beloved toys which were featured in the four well-received Toy Story pictures.

The concept of a Frozen 3 is certainly a “no-brainer” and we previously reported that there was the possibility of another Frozen picture not too long ago. The Frozen series is one franchise that Disney is not going to “let go” of so easily considering the remarkable box-office returns of the previous two Frozen pictures.

Don’t underestimate the quiet success which was 2016’s Zootopia, though. Zootopia earned an astonishing $341 million domestically and an “A” CinemaScore grade when it was released in theaters. A second film in the series is also a “no-brainer” and would hopefully feature more great music like the Shakira song, “Try Everything” from the 2016 movie.

All the Toy Story movies earned great CinemaScores with solid “A” grades with the second installment receiving a rare “A+” CinemaScore. 1995’s Toy Story made $223 million domestically, Toy Story 2 made $245 million, and Toy Story 3 upped the game significantly with an amazing $415 million domestic haul. Toy Story 4 jumped up to $434 million domestically the year right before the pandemic and Toy Story 5 may be just what we need to get people back into theaters full force post pandemic.

Bob Iger says there’s more to share about the three sequels which are on the horizon. That news could be unleashed in the not too distant future. These “unrivaled” franchises are almost guaranteed to inject more excitement into the theater going experience which dwindled a bit with the pandemic. While Avatar: The Way of Water proves there are people who want to go to the movies, these Disney hits will certainly get them back to theaters in droves.
