A Reboot of the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Film Series is in the Works

A Reboot of Pirates of the Caribbean is Brewing

A whole new cast of characters will come into fruition for a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, according to film producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

It has been 7 years since Johnny Depp played Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment of an immensely popular franchise. That film only made $172 million domestically despite an impressive international haul of $623 million in addition to its domestic gross. Depp may not be in the picture for the new reboot on the horizon, but then again, he may actually be a part of it. It’s too soon to tell.

A sixth Pirates film is not happening at the present time, nor is a “spin-off” film featuring Margot Robbie which had been planned at one point. Instead, what is guaranteed, is that there will be a reboot with new stars and new characters to bring the magic of the old Pirates of the Caribbean pictures to a whole new generation of movie-goers.

Jerry Bruckheimer is doing a reboot instead of another flat-out sequel so he doesn’t have to wait for key actors of the old franchise to be available to reprise their roles. A reboot will allow for a new take on the material with new performers who may help drive up domestic ticket sales. Johnny Depp could appear in the  reboot. Or he may stay out of the picture altogether.

Another entry in the Johnny Depp Pirates saga could still happen but the reboot is being given priority by producer Bruckheimer. Depp’s personal issues with Amber Heard had left things uncertain in terms of a direct sixth Pirates picture. Bruckheimer supports Depp as an actor and a friend and the producer has acknowledged that things in life happen.

Pirates films have been successful, for the most part, with mainstream audiences. The one exception being 2011’s misfire Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides which only earned a “B+” CinemaScore compared to the other pictures in the series’ “A” and “A-” grades. Despite the 2011 film’s disappointing reception, the film still earned a formidable $1 billion worldwide.

As for the Margot Robbie Pirates picture that was promised in the past, that project is not out of the question right now but the reboot of the famous film series is the priority of the filmmakers at this present time. If the producers know what’s good for them, they’ll throw Johnny Depp into a cameo in the upcoming reboot to help drive ticket sales and keep audiences’ memories of the first films of the series fresh in their heads since the early Pirates films were excellent crowd-pleasers with Depp at the helm.
