Beauty and the Beast Back on the Silver Screen

1991’s animated classic, Beauty and the Beast, will be back on the big screen for Disney‘s 100-year celebration.

From August 18th to the 31st, you will be able to catch 1991’s $200 million-plus grossing animated film from 1991, Beauty and the Beast, in theaters. As part of Disney’s 100-year celebration, the movie is the perfect way to help close out the summer at the movies.

In 1991, jaws dropped when the five Best Picture nominees were announced. Predictably enough, titles were called like Bugsy and The Silence of the Lambs, but Beauty and the Beast was the big surprise. Animated movies never got into the regular Best Picture race, so this was groundbreaking news for all involved.

Beauty and the Beast received a coveted “A+” CinemaScore grade and won the hearts of moviegoers all over the world with its magic. Who could forget the songs from the movie either? “Beauty and the Beast” and “Be Our Guest” were very likely the two most popular melodies from the film. This picture is about a young girl named Belle who loves books and falls in love with a beast while in a castle-like home with him. Only her love could break the curse which the beast had fallen under.

In 2017, Disney remade the animated movie into a feature length live-action picture. It grossed an astonishing $504 million and starred the versatile Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame. Audiences loved it but not quite as much as the animated movie, judging from the CinemaScore grade of simply an “A” that it received.

Angela Lansbury voiced the role of Mrs. Potts in 1991’s beloved classic. She gave the movie a touch of elegance and sophistication that won audiences over. For that year, a cartoon became a must-see date movie for couples of all ages as well as a favorite for family audiences.

It is arguable that Beauty and the Beast is Disney’s greatest animated triumph. When it was nominated for Best Picture of 1991 at the Oscars, there were only five Best Picture nominees which made the accomplishment all the more notable. The Prince of Tides and JFK had come out that year and had gotten nominated as well so Beauty and the Beast was in very prestigious company.

The re-release of Beauty and the Beast will give another generation the chance to experience the wonder and joy of seeing the movie on the big screen. While this is going to be a very limited run, some people who grew up on the original 1991 animated movie may just find themselves going back to see it again. Repeat viewings of the 1991 movie when it played in theaters were not unheard of as audiences simply loved every minute of the joyous Disney picture that Beauty and the Beast was and still is today.
