Mike Flanagan Directing The Shining Sequel Doctor Sleep

Mike Flanagan has been hired as the director of The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep. Doctor Sleep currently has no release date yet. This film project moving forward at Warner Bros. Pictures is seen as a direct result of the critical and box office success of Andy Muschietti‘s IT film adaptation.

Author Stephen King must be riding in the last few years. King scored a single episode walk-on role in Sons of Anarchy a few years ago while the television adaptation of Under the Dome was on the air. Gerald’s Game received good reviews when it premiered on Netflix last year and IT was triumphant at the box office (beyond anyone’s expectations) during the same year.

With regard to Gearld’s Game, Mike Flanagan directed that film so Flanagan already has experience working with King source material and adapting it into a feature film.

The plot synopsis for the book Doctor Sleep is very interesting:

Doctor Sleep follows an adult Danny Torrance from [The Shining]. Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.” There Dan meets Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival.

I hope they use flashbacks from The Shining in the film but tastefully, like in Blade Runner 2049.
