GODZILLA 2 (2019): Release Date For Sequel Pushed Back

King Kong Vs Godzilla

Warner Bros. Pictures pushes back release date for Godzilla 2. The sequel to 2014’s Godzilla is now set for release a little under a year later than was originally planned.

Initially set for release on June 8th, 2018, the studio has decided to delay the movie’s premiere until March 22nd, 2019. This brings Godzilla 2 much closer to the release of the following film in the developing franchise: the highly-anticipated crossover Godzilla vs Kong, which is scheduled for release in 2020.

Warner Bros. has not offered an explanation for the sudden change in release date, although it might be to put some distance between the upcoming Kong: Skull Island, another entry in the budding series set to hit theaters next year, and keep the Godzilla aspect of the franchise fresh in the minds of viewers when Godzilla vs Kong finally rolls around:

Moviegoers will next have an opportunity to visit the cinematic world of Godzilla and Kong with the March 10, 2017 release of director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island. 2018 won’t be entirely without giant monsters, too, as Legendary and Universal Pictures‘ Pacific Rim 2 is slated to arrive in theaters December 31, 2018.

Warner Bros. also slightly shifted the release of one of their mystery DC Comics feature films. Originally set for release on June 19, 2020 (the same date as a mystery Pixar release), the DC film will now arrive in theaters July 24, 2020. It has been highly speculated that the DC project in question is Green Lantern Corps, but that has not been officially confirmed by the studio at this time.
