A MODERN ART MASTERPIECE: THE UNTOLD STORY OF FULL METAL JACKET: Matthew Modine Producing Documentary Surrounding Stanley Kubrick’s War Picture

Matthew Modine Producing Doc on 1980’s Vietnam Classic
Matthew Modine is producing a new documentary on Stanley Kubrick‘s harrowing Vietnam War masterpiece from 1987, Full Metal Jacket.
A Modern Art Masterpiece: The Untold Story Of Full Metal Jacket is the title of a new full-length documentary which offers a glimpse behind the scenes of the powerful war picture, Full Metal Jacket. This new film has wrapped shooting and will be co-produced by one of the old film’s stars, Matthew Modine. This forthcoming documentary is being helmed by Stephen Rigg and offers a fascinating look at over 30 interviews with cast members, including Modine, Vincent D’Onofrio and Arliss Howard.
There will also be sound bytes of filmmaker Kubrick directing scenes of the 1987 Vietnam War masterwork showcased in the documentary. This movie was one of the definitive Vietnam pictures of all-time and traced the events that occurred when a platoon of Marines went from boot camp into battle. R. Lee Ermey, who actually served in the Marines, portrayed Gny. Sgt. Hartman and the actor delivered a performance for the record books as the drill sergeant whose wing the characters were under during the course of the picture. This 1987 movie was recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination from the films released during that year.
Full Metal Jacket was a groundbreaking movie for its time and was released at a point where Vietnam films were coming out fairly regularly. Platoon from Oliver Stone was among the first to be recognized during the mid 1980’s. Yet, Kubrick’s picture stood out on its own merits for its visually stunning cinematography and excellent cast that included terrific performances from the great Ermey, Modine, D’Onofrio and Howard, to name just a few. Rehearsals with the cast and Kubrick will be included in the new documentary. Kubrick was certainly one of the few directors who always took huge risks with his work and those choices paid off artistically for the 1987 picture. This documentary gives viewers a look at a master of his craft at work.
In the summer of 1987, Full Metal Jacket did well with adult audiences at the box-office, earning $46 million million domestically. It was one of the later films made by the legendary director Kubrick who passed away in 1999. Kubrick’s last picture was another Warner Bros. film, Eyes Wide Shut, the Tom Cruise starrer that was released the year of the filmmaker’s death. Full Metal Jacket earned a solid “B+” CinemaScore just like the equally powerful 1989 Vietnam War picture, Casualties of War, from renowned filmmaker Brian De Palma. Unlike Full Metal Jacket, Casualties of War sadly faltered at the box-office earning just $18 million domestically.
